I’m so excited about a blog with my daughter, she’s my greatest inspiration and revives my perspective when it becomes too skewed from daily stresses. Now that we’re back from our three weeks of fun and frivolity, its nose-to-the-grindstone time for both work and knitted FO’s.
My vacation/summer knitting begins with our beach trip, I choose a few, (read: ridiculous amount), favorite projects and pack a rather large carry-on full of yarn. Yes, I cringe through security waiting to explain the two dozen metal circs and massive amount of colorful fiber. This time I got lucky…lines were long and the hour was crack of dawn so security didn’t feel like discussing why a woman needed ten pounds of wool and a bikini, just move it along!
I had been rolling along with the
Rebecca#27, Sweater with Leaf Pattern prior to leaving…just a little practice for beach knitting…..I was cruising at blazing speeds mind you, on the first flight, then the little hop from Orlando to Ft. Myers I whipped out another three inches of lace/cable! I am invincible!!! Just before I disembarked I actually had a small stabbing thought of “slow down, you have three weeks you idiot, what if you run out of projects and are forced to lie on a beach with nothing but margaritas and old Interweave mags!!?”
Once in the condo I crammed the beach bag, squeezed into said bikini, grabbed the SPF50 and headed to my post, ie beach chair, …then it hit me….nightmare on Captiva Island….I had left the pattern on the plane!!!! My mind was a total blank, I was just starting the shaping and no pattern. Quick, I speed dialed my LYS back home, but no one there had a copy. My whole vacation was going up in smoke all because I was too good to make copies, or take responsibility for my lack of common sense. Stricken and depressed I crawled to my post snagged the first cabanna boy in sight and drowned my troubles in a salt-encrusted-lime crutch!
By day two, the sun was out, the gulf was calling and I had a new love, the ‘red’ scarf with reversible cables. My Bug’s school colors are red and blue and I could just see her wrapped in this for football games and the annual bonfire night, it would dress down for jeans or up for church or just for walks with the dog. It is the perfect shade of ‘red’, the wool is puffy with just enough slip to make it fun to glide through your hands, the cables are neat and interesting; the pattern, thankfully, is easy to memorize and no shaping involved, the perfect project for sunsets on the beach or boating with the clan….However, six inches into this gem Bug looks over and finally notices what Mom is knitting and casually asks, “whatcha makin’ ?” With absolute prides and motherly love I announce “a scarf for YOU with your school color for games and movie going and general hanging out” That’s when she caaasssually mentions her school color is not ‘pink’ but rather red, “But it is ‘red’! I say, not so casually. “No, that’s pink, mom, it’s okay, it’s pretty anyway” ‘Pretty Anyway!!!’ thus began the great debate; for three weeks I have ask perfect strangers, “what color is this?” some were helpful, some were focused with comments like ‘cranberry’ or ‘cherry with a hint of blue’ and some were just frightened of the crazy-color-blind lady. Well it’s RED for goodness sake just deal with it! Oh well, it will look great with MY charcoal-greyish-midnight-ebony wool coat….the one with a ‘hint’ of brown!
!
until next time, enjoy your summer knitting!
