Nothing says summer around here like blueberries picked fresh from the local farm on an early Saturday morning!  Bug and I headed out early yesterday with our hats and buckets and were rewarded with loaded bushes and easy pickin’s. My best friend from AL was driving up with her family to drop off my ‘nephew’. We usually only get him for a short week each summer, not near long enough for such a great kid. But I digress….the freshness of blueberries called for a fresh sidedish for dinner…..hello farmer’s market! We arrived there just as they were closing which, lucky for us, insured us of the best deals of the day!  We chose heirloom tomatoes from a local farmer resulting in this along with grilled chicken and fresh corn on the cob. Its what summer dinning is all about!

I couldn’t help but notice my obsession with with ‘blue’ lately. Maybe it’s the clear skies we’ve had maybe its the yummy organic cotton I’ve been fondling as I make my way thru that Rebecca#27 project…. although I should detest it by now as I’ve knit the front  a total of three times! The pattern is fine, just my own neglect and inability to carry on conversation/watch a movie ect.., while trying to cable, decrease, knit lace in pattern all in the same row. Now it is my quite-time project done early in the a.m. before the house starts to stir.  But the Blue Sky Alpaca, (‘blue again!), is so forgiving at being tinked and reknit that you just gotta love it.

Tomorrow it’s back to work, but this wonderful, relaxing, colorful weekend will see me through to the next.  Here’s hoping you’re knitting your favorite color today!

Mother

I’m so excited about a blog with my daughter, she’s my greatest inspiration and revives my perspective when it becomes too skewed from daily stresses.  Now that we’re back from our three weeks of fun and frivolity, its nose-to-the-grindstone time for both work and knitted FO’s.

My vacation/summer knitting begins with our beach trip, I choose a few, (read: ridiculous amount), favorite projects and pack a rather large carry-on full of yarn. Yes, I cringe through security waiting to explain the two dozen metal circs and massive amount of colorful fiber. This time I got lucky…lines were long and the hour was crack of dawn so security didn’t feel like  discussing why a woman needed ten pounds of wool and a bikini, just move it along!

I had been rolling along with the

Rebecca#27, Sweater with Leaf Pattern prior to leaving…just a little practice for beach knitting…..I was cruising at blazing speeds mind you, on the first flight, then the little hop from Orlando to Ft. Myers I whipped out another three inches of lace/cable! I am invincible!!!  Just before I disembarked I actually had a small stabbing thought of “slow down, you have three weeks you idiot, what if you run out of projects and are forced to lie on a beach with nothing but margaritas and old Interweave mags!!?”

Once in the condo I crammed the beach bag, squeezed into said bikini, grabbed the SPF50 and headed to my post, ie beach chair, …then it hit me….nightmare on Captiva Island….I had left the pattern on the plane!!!! My mind was a total blank, I was just starting the shaping and no pattern.  Quick, I speed dialed my LYS back home, but no one there had a copy. My whole vacation was going up in smoke all because I was too good to make copies, or take responsibility for my lack of common sense.  Stricken and depressed I crawled to my post snagged the first cabanna boy in sight and drowned my troubles in a salt-encrusted-lime crutch!

By day two, the sun was out, the gulf was calling and I had a new love, the ‘red’ scarf with reversible cables. My Bug’s school colors are red and blue and I could just see her wrapped in this for football games and the annual bonfire night, it would dress down for jeans or up for church or just for walks with the dog. It is the perfect shade of ‘red’, the wool is puffy with just enough slip to make it fun to glide through your hands, the cables are neat and interesting; the pattern, thankfully, is easy to memorize and no shaping involved, the perfect project for sunsets on the beach or boating with the clan….However, six inches into this gem Bug looks over and finally notices what Mom is knitting and casually asks, “whatcha makin’ ?” With absolute prides and motherly love I announce “a scarf for YOU with your school color for games and movie going and general hanging out” That’s when she  caaasssually mentions her school color is not ‘pink’ but rather red, “But it is ‘red’! I say, not so casually. “No, that’s pink, mom, it’s okay, it’s pretty anyway”    ‘Pretty Anyway!!!’ thus began the great debate; for three weeks I have ask perfect strangers, “what color is this?” some were helpful, some  were focused with comments like ‘cranberry’ or ‘cherry with a hint of blue’ and some were just frightened of the crazy-color-blind lady.  Well it’s RED for goodness sake just deal with it! Oh well, it will look great with MY charcoal-greyish-midnight-ebony wool coat….the one with a ‘hint’ of brown!

!

until next time, enjoy your summer knitting!

‘Mother’

The day began as an ordinary rainy day. Normally that wouldn’t put a hamper on my day since I don’t drive and have no current plans to commit a felony, but at the beach it means no lounging under the sun. Lacking the sun, surf, and overall heat we decided to make the drive into Fort Myers to see a movie and drink coffee at our favorite place.

Indiana Jones was on interesting film. Well made and actually interesting all the way through. I love Shia Labeuff!

Then came coffee. Glorious glorious coffee.

It’s this great little place where they have great music, great coffee, great lounge chairs to knit in. The vanilla latte’ s there are unreal they are so good, but I tend to get a Vienna mocha that I love! But back to knitting. My sock it going good and is as beautiful as ever.Knitting. Coffee. Is there anything sweeter?

The sky cleared up and the sun appeared just in time to give us a beautiful sunset.Have any of you ever seen a green flash? I haven’t and wish I could. We watch every night in hopes that we see one but after 7 years have yet to.

So today knitting and caffeine frenzy’s with a little splash Indiana Jones made it a near perfect day.

Knitting Beach Bums

Wow. This is my first post on a blog with my mother. I know that may seem a little weird. I mean come on. I’m a teenager and we’re supposed to hate our mothers but, alas, knitting brings us closer.

Crazy world right? But thats what knittings good for, bringing together two very different people whether it is age, beliefs, status, or culture that separates them knitting is the common ground on which everyone can find equal footing.

That out of the way I guess I’ll just start posting because I’ve got so much to say.

Ah, what a wonderful thing Florida is. The heat, the water, the sand, and the sudden urge to knit something. And knit something I have.

The Monkey Socks from knitty.com. I love them not only because they are lace but because the yarn was so divine! This picture does the color no justice but trust me it’s gorgeous. The yarn is artyarns cashlana not sure about the color.

This day was amazing and the beach has me completely enthralled. I will write more as I continue to take in my last week in paradise. Ciao!
